The Many Versions of House

This past monday House delivered one of the most brilliant episodes in house history. There couldnt have been a better start. The symbolismm directing, writing and acting was spot on. One thing that I found very interesting was the fact that some of the patients of the mental hospital were the inner house, they had his qualities in the severest of forms.

Superman: The patient after his wife died had a strong belief in himself as a super hero and in a moment of sheer thoughtless joy jumps off a building to fly. In a way House thinks himself superman of the medical world. The sky is the limit rebeling authority for the sake of medicine. However when House takes the leap off the building the surprise of gravity hits him like a brick wall. Superheroes are supposedly these perfect people who ooze sexuality and bravado. To superman of the house show it was about the bravado and the saving of mankind. With House its the same incredible desire to save people and the realization of imperfection spirals into heavy drug use.

Manic Mexican: The crazy rapping, idolizing roomate to House in the mental hospital represents the severity to House's overall craziness. How many times over the past 6 seasons of house have we seen House perform some highly insane borderline delusional test to determine medical results. Sure there is a thought process involved unlike the Manic Mexican but the crazy aspect to him often has moments of total irrationality and spontaneous outbursts. So the constant battle between them was a symbol for the internal conflict of his mind. Which was good news when nearing the end of the episode he came to terms with his crazy.

Silent Girl: The girl who took a vow of silence represented a very severe oberservant non responsive House. One of the only things she would respond even a little bit too was music by slowly tapping her feet or bopping her head. Music is House's release with a piano and multiple guitars in his house how could it not be? Though the girl was silent she watched and she understood the world around her. Silent Girl is Houses quiet observant inner core. Sensitive by nature and struggling to find a voice through sarcasm. Also Wilson is to House what sexy german lady is to silent girl. Supportive and often under appreciated. However at the end of the episode Silent girl finds her voice in an old music box as House did with the whole institution as a whole.

Overall this episode touched my heart and the end was bittersweet. I never wanted that scene with House rapping to end. Hilarity does always ensue on House even in a Mental Hospital because if you cant find the humor what can you find?

  1. Kaylea, I am just now catching up on your Blog posts and am blown away by your insightful, thought-provoking reviews. I really like this one. Your analysis of how the different "crazy" people reflected different parts of House was amazing. Keep up the good work. Love, Lynda
